Poland in the world – diaspora policy of Polish state (with particular emphasis on the Polish and German experiences and mutual relations)
The project is devoted to the policy of the Polish state’ diaspora policy, which aims to recognise diasporic communities as an integral part of the ‘global nation’. Research activities will focus on the period from 1999, when a package of three laws (on Polish citizenship, repatriation and the Charter of the Pole) was created to comprehensively regulate the Polish state’s relations with Poles abroad, with a particular focus on the time after Russia’s attack on Ukraine in 2014 and 2022, which affected the Polish community living in Ukraine and prompted the Polish state to take specific assistance measures. The project aims to answer the following research questions: 1) How can the phenomenon of state policy towards the diaspora be theoretically grasped in the context of maintaining and legitimising the unity of the ‘global nation’ (Poles at home and abroad); 2) How has Poland’s diaspora policy evolved over the years, in particular towards Polish settlings in Germany, the United Kingdom, Kazakhstan and Ukraine?; 3) To what extent has the German experience of diaspora policy served as a model for the development of a similar policy in Poland?; 4) What interactions can be observed between German and Polish diaspora policy?; 5) What actions towards the diaspora is the Polish state taking during the war that has been taking place in Ukraine since 2014 and in full scale since 2022?
