A power-knowledge approach

Edward Elgar Publishing | s. 2-27

Abstrakt

This introductory chapter provides an overview of the content of the edited volume and introduces the power-knowledge approach to deportation studies and other fields of research characterized by power imbalances. My conception of knowledge production is inspired by Michel Foucault; I take my ethical bearings from feminist writers, particularly Berenice Fisher and Joan Tronto. A power-knowledge approach implies, on the one hand, reflexivity about inequalities in knowledge production and, on the other, concrete methodological solutions for addressing power imbalances at every stage of the research process: from seeking access to ‘the field’ to disseminating research findings. As my introduction suggests, an ethics of care should lie at the heart of the research process, with researchers prioritising the wellbeing of people in precarious and distressing situations. Against a positivist paradigm that seeks to extract data from research participants, the power-knowledge approach prioritises their agency and includes them in knowledge co-production.
