Migrating racialisations, making of Polishness and the production of whiteness. Roma and Gadje from Poland

Routledge | pages: 16

Abstract

While mobility of Roma within the EU generated huge academic interest, the migration of Polish Roma has only recently received scholarly attention. This chapter deals with racialisation processes concerning Polish Roma from the perspective of those who experience it while being able to strategically redefine it. We look at Polish Roma experiences in Poland, the UK and Germany, in particular, in relation to other migrants from Poland who are not Roma but who racialise Roma to emphasise their whiteness and, implicitly, their superiority. Using the notion of ‘migrating racialisations’ to understand how race ‘travels’ with people, we show how people make sense of it, and we argue for paying more attention to ‘flexible epistemologies’ that Roma use to navigate through complex, oppressive social structures.
