Professor at the Centre of Migration Research, University of Warsaw (CMR) and the Chairman of the CMR Scientific Council. In 2016-2019 the Head of the Chair of International Economics at Lazarski University in Warsaw. Until September 2016 he was the Director of CMR which he founded in 1993. In 1966-2011, while being a staff member (since 1986 – a full professor) of the Faculty of Economic Sciences, University of Warsaw, he served as a deputy dean and a director of think tank – the Polish Policy Research Group, and was in charge of the chair of statistics and the chair of demography. Over his academic career he lectured in several renowned academic institutions in the USA, Australia and Europe.

In 2010-2018 the Chairman of the Committee for Migration Studies, the Polish Academy of Sciences. He is also a member of the Government Population Council.

Professor Okólski received his Ph.D. in 1970 (University of Lodz) and his Habilitated Doctor degree in 1978 (University of Warsaw). In 1986 he was made a titular professor. Great social transformations and their impact upon population processes are at the core of his research interests, including, in particular, globalization impacts on the world economy, international labour mobility, migration theory, migration trends in Central and Eastern Europe. demographic transition in Poland, and health crisis in the European ex-communist countries.

For several years he was counselor to the Speaker of the Senate (the higher chamber of the Parliament), served as a member of the Executive Board of IMISCOE European Network, the IOM Advisory Board, the Advisory Council of EurAsylum and International Advisory Board of NCCR (Swiss National Science Foundation). Professor Okólski chairs the Advisory Editorial Board of Central and Eastern European Migration Review and is a member of Editorial Committee of such periodicals as Journal of Comparative Migration Studies, Przeszłość Demograficzna Polski and Studia Migracyjne – Przegląd Polonijny. In the past he was the editor in chief of Oeconmica Polona and Studia Demograficzne.

He coordinated a number of Polish and international research projects in the area of economics, demography and migration studies, most recently: IDEA (2007-2009) within the 6th Framework Programme of the European Commission and Maestro (2013-2017) funded by the National Centre of Science (http://migageing.uw.edu.pl/)

His academic activities include lecturing and conducting research in various Polish and foreign universities or institutes (i.a. Columbia University, University of Pennsylvania, University of Maryland, Indiana University, Australian National University, Moscow State University, Vytautas Magnus University, Humboldt University, University of London, University College London, University of Glasgow, University of Geneva, University of Amsterdam, University of Bonn, University of Bologna and National Institute of Demographic Studies in Paris). On numerous occasions Professor Okólski was appointed to be an expert of the government of Poland and a number of international organizations (United Nations, European Commission, World Bank, Council of Europe, OECD, ILO and IOM).

The list of his publications includes 400 scientific works, of which 20 books.

Classical music and modern history are among his non-professional hobbies. He is a fan of football and speedway, and strives to be active on tennis court, bike trails and Alpine slopes.
