dr Marta Pachocka

Dr Marta Pachocka is an economist and political scientist. She has been Co-coordinator of the Laboratory of Urban and Regional Migration Policies (since 2022) and Co-coordinator of the Humanitarian Observatory for Central and Eastern Europe (HOCEE) (since 2024) at the Centre of Migration Research, University of Warsaw. Previously, she served as Head of the Migration Policies Research Unit (2018–2022) at the Centre. She is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Studies, Institute of International Studies, Collegium of Socio-Economics, SGH Warsaw School of Economics. She is also a migration expert in the Team Europe Direct Poland network of the European Commission. She serves as Vice-Chair of the Polish European Community Studies Association (PECSA); Co-chair of the Research Section “Migration Processes and Migration Governance” of the Polish Association of European Studies (PTSE); Secretary and Board Member of the Research Committee RC-46 “Migration and Citizenship” of the International Political Science Association (IPSA); and Executive Committee Member of the Metropolis International Migration Network.

She has served as principal investigator, lead researcher and team member in numerous national projects (funded, among others, by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Science Centre, the National Bank of Poland) and international projects (funded, among others, under EU programmes such as Horizon Europe, Horizon 2020, Erasmus+, LLP and Creative Europe), including projects concerning migration, integration, and migration policies in the European Union and Poland (particularly asylum, reception, integration and return policies). At the Centre of Migration Research, University of Warsaw, she is a member of the Horizon Europe project “INNOVATE – Innovating Dialogues on Migration Policies and Practices” (2024–2027; coordinator: European University Institute). She led the national team in the Horizon Europe project “GAPs – De-centring the Study of Migrant Returns and Readmission Policies in Europe and Beyond” (2023–2026; coordinator: Uppsala University). Since 2016, she has been involved in numerous projects at the CMR concerning migration studies in Poland and Europe. At SGH, she currently coordinates the CIVICA Research Hub TRANSCONNECT consortium “Researching Integration Pathways, Transconnectivity and Policy Innovation in Multilevel Migration Governance” (CIVICA, RID Lead, Ministry of Science and Higher Education, 2026–2027). She is also a member of numerous EU-funded projects (including Erasmus+ Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence at Warsaw School of Economics CEWSE II; Jean Monnet Module EUCities; Jean Monnet Policy Debate AfriquEurope; and Horizon Europe Skills4Justice). She previously co-led the national team in the Horizon 2020 project Welcoming Spaces and served as Project Leader of the Erasmus+ Jean Monnet Module EUMIGRO and Team Leader of the Erasmus+ Jean Monnet Networks project AMENET at SGH.

She is the author and co-author of numerous book chapters, journal articles, research reports and conference papers. She serves as Co-editor of the book series “Mobility & Politics” published by Springer Nature/Palgrave Macmillan. She has extensive experience as a moderator, panellist, discussant, speaker and facilitator at academic and public engagement events addressed to diverse audiences. She also serves as an evaluator in funding competitions supported by the European Union and by international research councils and research funding agencies. She has undertaken short-term research stays at Carleton University, Canada (2022), and Sciences Po Paris, France (2015). She was also a Visiting Professor at the University of Economics in Bratislava, Slovakia (2015), and the University of Tartu, Estonia (2016). Her research interests include socio-demographic transformations in Europe and the European Union and their consequences; international migration; multilevel migration governance (including the role of local actors); EU migration and asylum policies; forced migration; international economics; and international organisations.
