Mind the Gap? Quantifying Interlinkages between Two Traditions in Migration Literature

Abstract

“Gap,” “split,” and “divide” are just a few among many words used in publicizing the divergence of literature on internal and international migration. In this paper, we empirically test what has so far been just a conjecture. Using Web of Science data and bibliometric techniques, we, first, provide quantitative measures of the size of the proclaimed gap. Second, we inquire into the existing conceptual overlap between the two strands of academic literature. Third, we search for channels through which research on internal and international migration can potentially blend into becoming a single, more holistic area of study.

Did Covid-19 make things worse? The pandemic as a push factor stimulating the emigration intentions of junior doctors from Poland: A mixed methods study

Did Covid-19 make things worse? A new paper by Dominika Pszczółkowska, Sara Bojarczuk, Maciej Duszczyk, Kamil Matuszczyk and Emilia Szyszkowska explores the migration intentions of future Polish doctors and how these were influenced by the Covid-19 pandemic and its management in Poland. The mixed methods study (survey of final year students at medical schools + interviews with junior doctors conducted in 2022) revealed that the pandemic was of secondary importance compared to such factors as the sociopolitical situation in Poland (including hate speech towards doctors), the participants’ family situation and factors related to regular work conditions in healthcare.more
